Features
As with all the Samsung Android smartphones, the Exhibit 4G comes
with the TouchWiz user interface enhancements. This includes the
standard up to 5 customizable homes screens, shortcuts, and
applications. Each home screen has the fixed four buttons for the phone
dialer, contacts, messaging and applications; however in the
applications list the application button is replaced with a home button.
The default pull down notification area lets you toggle the WiFi,
Bluetooth, GPS, Silent Mode and Auto rotation. This panel also shows the
list of notifications in one place. The TouchWiz enhancements do not
interfere with operating system updates and do not slow the phone down.
Samsung Exhibit 4G from T-Mobile also comes with some applications
specifically loaded by both Samsung and T-Mobile. These applications
include Qik for video chat, Samsung Media Hub, TV and Movie Rental
Portal. There is also the T-Mobile TV for live and on-demand streaming
and videos. T-Mobile has also included WiFi Calling, Visual Voice Mail
and shortcuts to online Android stores.
Verdict
The Samsung Exhibit 4G is a very viable option to consider for those
who are looking for an Android powered smartphone. The Multi Touch
Android device is feature rich and offers respectable performance for
price value when looking at the other options out there. The 1 GHz
Cortex A8 processor may not be able to compete head to head with the
dual core processors out there, however, this phone is well balanced
between performance, features and usability. The AMOLED Capacitive Multi
Touch3.5 inch screen does not offer enough space for the on screen
virtual keyboard for those with bigger thumbs. The dedicated camera
button is missed here and would have made it very convenient to take
pictures and start-stop video recording. The camera software is also a
little slow and there is enough of a delay between button press and the
actual image capture. This setup is less than ideal for fast moving
scenes. Overall, for it’s under $100 price tag, this smartphone offers
the full range of features that any Gingerbread powered smartphone
should have.
Price
T-Mobile is offering the Samsung Exhibit 4G with a new two year
service agreement for $79.99 after a mail in rebate. The T-Mobile TV
will cost another $9.99 per month, and the phone comes with a 30 day
free trial for the service. Exhibit 4G may also be available without
commitments for approximately $345.
