Owners of the HTC Droid Incredible are faced with some grim news
today. A curious user emailed HTC in regards to whether or not the Droid
Incredible would be receiving the Gingerbread update, and HTC responded
heartily with an emphatic ‘no’.
The real mystery here is that Android hackers are aware of a test
build of Gingerbread that is available on Verizon’s servers, but the
mystery as to why it won’t see the light of day has remained unsolved.
If past indications are correct, HTC may feel as though creating a
suitable build for the Droid Incredible would take up too much time and
they would rather dedicate their resources elsewhere. This is not the
first time an HTC phone was thought to be receiving an update, as the
Desire was to have Gingerbread before HTC scrapped that idea as well.
For Droid Incredible owners who want to maintain control of their
device and do not have any qualms about modifications, rooting is still
an option. There is plenty of support for the Droid Incredible in the
custom ROM scene, so users who don’t want to rely on HTC will have
Gingerbread any way it goes.
If you’re a Droid Incredible user who is unhappy with the latest
updates, the best you can do is email HTC support and tell them that
you’re unhappy with their decision to cease updates on the device.
Desire owners kicked up a large enough stink that plans for a modified
Gingerbread build returned for a short period, so there’s no reason
something like this might not work for Droid Incredible users.
