Apple has enough cash available to buy some of the largest manufacturers of mobile phones, as shown by a series of calculations and a graph made recently by Horace Dediu from Asymco. Thus, we find out that the 70 billion worth liquidities of the Cupertino company enable it to acquire both Nokia and HTC, RIM and Motorola Mobility. How about that? It is certainly an interesting fact that simply shows you the staggering financial power of Apple compared with its competitors.
But who could have a chance against Apple? Only Samsung stands in the way of the creator of the iPhone to hold in check the entire mobile industry. Great players mentioned in this study produced no less than 75% of the phones sold worldwide, and at this moment the value of Nokia reached 22.6 billion dollars, while RIM consulate themselves with 13.8 billion. HTC is worth 25.4 billion dollars, and the newly formed Motorola Mobility branch would make Apple to take out of their treasury “only” 4.2 billion dollars. Maintaining the current growth rate, Apple could buy the Samsung giant by 2015. Obviously we are talking about the section which produces phones. Regarding LG and Sony Ericsson, their values are more difficult to calculate because they are more deeply integrated into their parent companies. However, for the sake of analysis, these companies could be purchased without problems.
So what are the chances that Apple will actually buy these companies and become invincible? Well, they are pretty slim. We are however confident that such a monopoly will not be allowed, and at worst a coalition of Asian manufacturers such as Huawei, ZTE, Toshiba, Panasonic and Fujitsu, possibly with Google would be a pillar of strength in the way of the mammoth that Apple would become.
