Samsung unveils the Galaxy Note, a 5.3-inch device with a built-in stylus cum pen that can be used for drawing, grabbing screen captures and note-taking. It is reminiscent of the the Dell Streak mainly because of its large size and its tablet/smartphone hybrid nature. Officially though, the Galaxy Note is classified as a smartphone. This will not prevent users though from enjoying its tablet-like features.
The Galaxy Note runs on Gingerbread and is capable of LTE and HSPA+ connectivity. As expected, it comes with a Super AMOLED display that is becoming a standard among high end Samsung devices. Other features of the Galaxy Note include a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 8 megapixel rear camera, a 2 megapixel front camera and removable 1,500mAH battery.
To take advantage of the built-in stylus, the Galaxy Note comes with the S Pen, a touch-optimized interface. It also includes the S Planner, a calendar and scheduling app and S Memo, a note-taking app that is capable of accepting voice, photo, text and handwritten inputs. The Android 2.3 OS of the Galaxy Note is also layered with TouchWiz, Samsung’s proprietary UI and seven home screens. A surprising aspect of the Galaxy Note is its weight. Considering its bulky size, the smartphone is reasonably light at 178 grams. It is also quite thin at 0.38 inches.
Pricing and availability date for the Galaxy Note are not yet available. Samsung officials said that they are still discussing with different carriers worldwide. Don’t hold your breath because it may take a while before the Galaxy Note becomes available.
