HTC Flyer – A tablet to look out for!

If there’s a tablet out there that can make you forget you ever used/tested an iPad 2, then clearly it’s all about HTC Flyer. Far from being the perfect tablet, this first HTC model is a very attractive option, especially if we take into account the future Honeycomb 3.2 update. My first contact with the HTC tablet was in Barcelona during its official announcement at the Mobile World Congress 2011 so let’s see how it has come so far.

The tablet is very user-friendly and above all, the learning curve is very slim and users will instantly feel the familiarity of the HTC Flyer, even if they are tablet rookies. My temptation is to call this model a bigger HTC Sensation, but I won’t, as there are several aspects that distinguish this model from such a description. After my experience with the BlackBerry PlayBook, I was tempted to make swipe gestures on the screen navigation menus, but I recovered pretty quickly and used the capacitive buttons at the bottom of the screen and the touch interface boasted by the HTC Flyer. The same buttons illuminate when you turn the tablet in landscape mode.
Of all the tablets tested by me before, Flyer is the most comfortable and easy to handle. It is 13.2 mm thick and weighs 420 grams. You can easily keep the tablet in one hand and the QWERTY keyboard is very easy to use. The sound is heard loud and clear and a great plus point for the HTC is the headset that comes with the tablet. Apple and RIM are still lagging behind in this department. The 5 megapixel camera is slightly better than the one sported by the BlackBerry PlayBook, especially in video capture and much better than the iPad 2’s, which totally disappointed me.
All in all, the HTC Flyer is a very good purchase option, but I’m not sure if its price will put a smile on many people’s faces – I’m sure you get my drift!
